Abstract

Provided is an image delivery apparatus configured to deliver a moving image that is a display object to an image display control apparatus configured to display a moving image to present the moving image to a user. The image delivery apparatus delivers, to the image display control apparatus at one time, any one of a plurality of moving images different from each other in portion displayable at high resolution in a displayable range, and acquires information regarding a watching direction of the user in the displayable range, to thereby select a moving image of the plurality of moving images as a delivery target based on the information regarding the watching direction.

[0002] Hitherto, there has been known a technology that delivers moving images in real time via a communication network to allow users to view the moving images.

[0003] With the above-mentioned technology in the related art, it is difficult to deliver high-resolution moving images if a communication network does not have sufficient bandwidth.

[0004] The present invention has been made in view of the circumstance described above, and has an object to provide an image delivery apparatus, an image delivery method, and a program capable of reducing required communication bandwidth while achieving relatively high-resolution display in a direction that a user watches.

Solution to Problem

[0005] An image delivery apparatus according to the present invention is an image delivery apparatus configured to deliver a moving image that is a display object to an image display control apparatus configured to display a moving image to present the moving image to a user, the image delivery apparatus including: a delivery unit configured to deliver, to the image display control apparatus at one time, any one of a plurality of moving images different from each other in portion displayable at high resolution in a displayable range; and a watching direction acquisition unit configured to acquire information regarding a watching direction of the user in the displayable range. The delivery unit selects a moving image of the plurality of moving images as a delivery target based on the information regarding the watching direction.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENT

[0018] Now, an embodiment of the present invention is described in detail with reference to the drawings.

[Image Format of Panoramic Image]

[0019] An image generation apparatus according to the present embodiment generates a panoramic image including a scene of the entire or part of the range of the whole sky seen from an observation point. The panoramic image that is generated by the image generation apparatus according to the present embodiment is hereinafter referred to as “panoramic image I.” The panoramic image I corresponds to two-dimensional (plane) image data including the scene of the entire or part of the range of the whole sky. Here, the whole sky means all the directions from the observation point, that is, 360.degree. in the horizontal direction (left and right direction) and 180.degree. in the vertical direction (up and down direction) from the zenith to the nadir.

[0020] Now, a specific example of the image format of the panoramic image I of the present embodiment is described. The whole-sky scene seen from the observation point is displayed on a virtual spherical surface with the position of the observation point being the center. Here, the virtual sphere corresponding to the whole-sky scene is referred to as “virtual sphere S.” In the following, a coordinate system is used for description, the coordinate system including three axes of an x axis, a y axis, and a z axis that are orthogonal to each other with a center point O of the virtual sphere S corresponding to the observation point being the origin. The x axis and the z axis are taken on the horizontal plane while the y axis is taken in the vertical direction.

[0021] In the present embodiment, a direction seen from the observation point in the whole sky is set as a particularly important direction. This important direction is hereinafter referred to as “attention direction.” Here, the attention direction is set to an x-axis positive direction. The attention direction is a direction to which the user is supposed to particularly pay attention or a direction to which a person who has generated the panoramic image I wants the user to particularly pay attention. The attention direction may be, for example, a direction in which an important object is displayed. In the present embodiment, the panoramic image I is generated such that a region closer to the attention direction is displayed at higher quality (higher resolution) on the virtual sphere S.

[0022] The virtual sphere S is divided into four sections by two planes that pass through the center point O and are parallel to the attention direction and orthogonal to each other, so that four 1/4 spherical surfaces S1 to S4 are obtained as illustrated in FIG. 1. In FIG. 1, the virtual sphere S is divided into the four sections by two planes of an xy plane (vertical plane) and an xz plane (horizontal plane). The four 1/4 spherical surfaces each have a shape that passes through the center point O and is symmetrical with respect to one plane parallel to the attention direction. Specifically, the 1/4 spherical surface S1 and the 1/4 spherical surface S3 each have a shape symmetrical with respect to a plane represented by y=z. Meanwhile, the 1/4 spherical surface S2 and the 1/4 spherical surface S4 each have a shape symmetrical with respect to a plane represented by y=-z.

[0023] In the following, with the 1/4 spherical surface S1 of the four 1/4 spherical surfaces taken as an example, a method of generating part of the panoramic image I that includes a scene corresponding to the 1/4 spherical surface S1 is described. The scene in the range corresponding to the 1/4 spherical surface S1 is projected on a projection surface A1 including a plurality of polygons (triangles and rectangles) connected to each other. FIG. 2 is a perspective diagram illustrating a specific example of the projection surface A1. A center line along the attention direction of the projection surface A1 is hereinafter referred to as “trunk line T.” As described above, the 1/4 spherical surface S1 has the shape symmetrical with respect to the plane represented by y=z, and hence the trunk line T is also placed on this plane. The plane on which the trunk line T is placed (here, the plane represented by y=z) is hereinafter referred to as “center plane.” The trunk line T represents a shape obtained by cutting the projection surface A1 at the center plane.

[0024] FIG. 3 illustrates a specific example of the shape of the trunk line T in the center plane. Note that, as an example, the projection surface A1 here includes six polygons connected to each other. Accordingly, the trunk line T includes six line segments as illustrated in FIG. 3. Further, in the following, positions in the center plane are represented by a two-dimensional coordinate system including an X axis and a Y axis orthogonal to each other. Here, the X axis matches the x axis in the three-dimensional space, but the Y axis is tilted toward the z axis from the y axis by 45.degree..

[0025] Now, a method of determining the shape of the trunk line T is described. Here, the six line segments of the trunk line T are denoted by T.sub.1, T.sub.2, T.sub.3, T.sub.4, T.sub.5, and T.sub.6 in order from a side opposite to the attention direction. Further, the end point on the direction side opposite to the attention direction (X-axis negative direction) of the trunk line T is referred to as “starting point P.sub.1,” and the end points of the respective line segments are referred to as “relay points P.sub.2, P.sub.3, P.sub.4, P.sub.5, and P.sub.6” in order from the side closer to the starting point P.sub.1. In addition, the end point on the attention direction (X-axis positive direction) side of the trunk line T is referred to as “end point P.sub.7.”

[0026] The relay points P.sub.2 to P.sub.6 are placed such that angles formed by the respective line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 with the center point O (that is, angles formed by both of the ends of the respective line segments and the center point O) are equal to each other. Specifically, in a case where five auxiliary lines are drawn to evenly divide an angle P.sub.1OP.sub.7(=180.degree.) into six, the relay points P.sub.2 to P.sub.6 are placed on these auxiliary lines. In the following, this angle (the angle formed by each line segment with the center point O) is referred to as “corresponding angle .alpha..” The line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 each cover a range at the corresponding angle .alpha. when seen from the center point O.

[0027] The starting point P.sub.1 is set to a position away from the center point O by a predetermined distance on the direction side opposite to the attention direction (X-axis negative direction). Here, the starting point P.sub.1 is at a position coordinate of (X=-1, Y=0). The angle OP.sub.1P.sub.2 here is referred to as “exit angle .beta..” In addition, the relay point P.sub.3 is determined such that the angle P.sub.2OP.sub.3 is 30.degree. and an angle OP.sub.2P.sub.3 is 90.degree.. The remaining relay points P.sub.4 to P.sub.6 and the end point P.sub.7 are sequentially determined such that an angle P.sub.n-1OP.sub.n (corresponding angle .alpha.) is 30.degree. and an angle OP.sub.n-1P.sub.n (exit angle .beta.) is 90.degree..

[0028] With the starting point P.sub.1, the relay points P.sub.2 to P.sub.6, and the end point P.sub.7 at the positions determined in this way, the shape of the trunk line T in the center plane is determined. Here, the line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 have lengths different from each other. Further, the line segment closer to the attention direction is longer, and the line segment closer to the direction opposite to the attention direction is shorter. This means that the trunk line T has a shape that is asymmetrical with respect to a plane passing through the center point O and being vertical to the attention direction, and has long portions on the attention direction side compared to the opposite side.

[0029] Now, it is considered to represent the position coordinates in the center plane by polar coordinates (r, .theta.). At this time, the shape of the trunk line T is represented by r=f(.theta.) that is a single-valued function in the polar coordinate system. Here, r indicates distance to the center point O, and .theta. indicates an angle value with the X-axis negative direction being 0.degree. and a counterclockwise direction being the positive direction, and takes a value of 0.degree. or larger and 180.degree. or smaller. When the trunk line T determined by the method described above is expressed by a function f, the function f is a monotonically increasing function in which r is increased as .theta. is increased. With this, the trunk line T per unit of angle can be longer toward the attention direction.

[0030] The shape of the trunk line T is determined, and five branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 are next placed so as to pass through the respective relay points P.sub.2 to P.sub.6. The branch lines F correspond to ribs in a case where the trunk line T is regarded as a spine, and are placed so as to extend to both lateral sides when seen from the extension direction of the trunk line T. Specifically, here, the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 are placed along a direction orthogonal to the center plane. Further, the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 are each placed such that the middle point of the branch line matches the relay point on the trunk line T. Each of the branch lines F has a length that is determined to correspond to the 1/4 spherical surface S1.

[0031] By taking the branch line F.sub.1 as an example, the placement of the branch line F.sub.1 is specifically described. FIG. 4 illustrates a look in the plane that includes the relay point P.sub.2 and the branch line F.sub.1 and is vertical to the x axis. When the 1/4 spherical surface S1 is cut by a plane that passes through the relay point P.sub.2 and is orthogonal to the attention direction, a fan shape with a central angle of 90.degree. is obtained. Thus, the length of the branch line F.sub.1 is determined such that an angle formed by both ends of the branch line F.sub.1 and a point on the x axis is 90.degree. as illustrated in FIG. 4. Here, the length of the branch line F.sub.1 is twice as large as a distance from the relay point P.sub.2 to the x axis. Note that, the middle point of the branch line F.sub.1 matches the relay point P.sub.2, and hence the branch line F.sub.1 is symmetrical with respect to the center plane. Similar to the branch line F.sub.1, the length of each of the branch lines F.sub.2 to F.sub.5 is determined so as to be twice as large as a distance from the corresponding relay point to the x axis.

[0032] The positions of the trunk line T and the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 are determined in this way, and the entire shape of the projection surface A1 is thus determined. Specifically, the projection surface A1 has a shape obtained by connecting the starting point P.sub.1 and the end point P.sub.7 of the trunk line T and both ends of each of the branch lines F. A scene of the 1/4 spherical surface S1 is projected on the projection surface A1. Each of the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 is symmetrical with respect to the center plane, and hence the entire of the projection surface A1 is symmetrical with respect to the center plane similar to the 1/4 spherical surface S1. Note that, on the projection surface A1, a branch line F.sub.d is set in addition to the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5. The branch line F.sub.d is a line segment on the projection surface A1 that is parallel to the other branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5. A method of determining the position of the branch line F.sub.d is described later.

[0033] The scene projected on the projection surface A1 is converted to a planar shape, thereby forming part of the panoramic image I. A region in the panoramic image I that corresponds to the projection surface A1 is hereinafter referred to as “image portion Ip1.” In the present embodiment, the image portion Ip1 has a square shape. FIG. 5 illustrates the image portion Ip1. FIG. 5 illustrates line segments corresponding to the trunk line T and the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 in the projection surface A1.

[0034] As illustrated in FIG. 5, the trunk line T is associated with one diagonal of the image portion Ip1. Here, the upper-right vertex of the image portion Ip1 corresponds to the starting point P.sub.1, and the lower-left vertex thereof corresponds to the end point P.sub.7. This diagonal, which is denoted by P.sub.1P.sub.7, is divided into six and the six sections are associated with the respective line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 of the trunk line T. The lengths of the line segments in the image portion Ip1 are determined depending on the lengths of the respective line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 in the projection surface A.sub.1. The six line segments are, however, not necessarily converted to satisfy a length ratio on the projection surface A1, and may be converted to have lengths corrected depending on the positions in the center plane.

[0036] The length of each line segment is corrected to the value obtained through multiplication by the correction factor. A correction factor a.sub.n for an n-th line segment T.sub.n is calculated by the following expression with the use of a correction factor a.sub.n-1 for an (n-1)-th line segment T.sub.n-1 (that is, a line segment adjacent to the side opposite to the attention direction), the corresponding angle .alpha., and the exit angle .beta..

Here, all the line segments have the corresponding angle .alpha. of 30.degree. and the exit angle .beta. of 90.degree., and hence the following is satisfied.

Further, no correction is required for the line segment T.sub.1, and hence a.sub.1=1 is satisfied. Thus, a.sub.2 is calculated as follows, for example.

Here, a.sub.2 is approximately 1.15. Correction factors for the line segments T.sub.2 to T.sub.6 are calculated in order in a similar manner. In Table 1, the correction factors for the respective line segments calculated by this expression are indicated. The corrected length of each line segment takes a value obtained by multiplying the length in the projection surface A1 by this correction factor.

[0037] The length of each line segment in the image portion Ip1 is calculated to match this corrected length. Specifically, when the total value of the corrected lengths of the line segments T.sub.1 to T.sub.6 is denoted by Lt, the ratio of the length of each line segment in the image portion Ip1 to the entire length of the trunk line T is obtained by (corrected length)/Lt. The length of each line segment in the actual image portion Ip1 takes a value obtained by multiplying this ratio by the length of the diagonal of the image portion Ip1.

[0038] Such correction reduces a discontinuous change in length of the trunk line T per unit of angle. In the case where the shape of the trunk line T is represented by the single-valued function r=f(.theta.) in the polar coordinate system as described above, when .theta. is increased, the length of the trunk line T with respect to the unit of amount of the angle .theta. is changed discontinuously at a boundary between the line segments. Such a discontinuous change causes a discontinuous change in width of a region in the image portion Ip1 that corresponds to the unit of region on the virtual sphere S (that is, information density in the image), which is not preferred. In view of this, through correction with the correction factor a.sub.n as described above, such discontinuously can be prevented. Note that, a correspondence relation between the position of any point on each line segment of the projection surface A1, and a position in each line segment in the image portion Ip1 may be determined by interpolation such as linear interpolation.

[0039] The branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 in the projection surface A1 are each converted to a line segment parallel to a diagonal intersecting the diagonal corresponding to the trunk line T in the image portion Ip1. Specifically, the branch lines F.sub.1 to F.sub.5 are converted to pass through the respective relay points P.sub.2 to P.sub.6 in the image portion Ip1 as in the projection surface A1. Note that, the image portion Ip1 is a square here, and hence each of the branch lines F is orthogonal to the trunk line T.

[0042] Note that, in conversion of a triangle to a triangle, positions at which the points inside the triangle are located after conversion are uniquely determined. In conversion of a rectangle to a rectangle, on the other hand, positions at which the points inside the rectangle are located after conversion are not uniquely determined. Thus, rectangles are converted as follows, for example. Specifically, first, positions in a direction parallel to the trunk line T are linearly interpolated. After that, positions in a direction intersecting the trunk line T (that is, a direction parallel to the branch lines F) are linearly interpolated. Through conversion described above, any point on the projection surface A1 can be associated with a position in the image portion Ip1.

[0043] Note that, the method of converting a rectangle is not limited to the one described above. For example, the trapezoid formed by the two branch lines F on the projection surface A1 may be divided into two triangles, and each triangle may be converted on the image portion Ip1. Alternatively, the triangles or the rectangles on the projection surface A1 may further be divided by executing tessellation processing, and conversion may be performed per unit of polygon that is obtained through division. With such a conversion method, errors that occur in conversion can be reduced to some extent. Further, such processing of converting a polygon to a polygon, such as tessellation, can be easily achieved with the use of a well-known computer graphics library, for example.

[0044] Through conversion described above, the scene in the 1/4 spherical surface S1 is converted to the image portion Ip1 having a planar shape. Scenes in the 1/4 spherical surfaces S2 to S4 are also projected on the projection surfaces A2 to A4 to be subjected to conversion in a similar manner, and image portions Ip2 to Ip4 are obtained. With the thus obtained four image portions Ip1 to Ip4 arranged, the planar panoramic image I including the whole-sky scene is generated.

[0045] FIG. 6 illustrates an example of the panoramic image I that is obtained in this way. Each image portion is a square, and hence the panoramic image I also has a square shape as a whole. A center C of the panoramic image I corresponds to the attention direction (x-axis positive direction). FIG. 6 illustrates curves representing ranges with angles of 30.degree., 60.degree., 90.degree., and 120.degree. from the attention direction. As illustrated in FIG. 6, a wider region is provided at a position closer to the attention direction in the panoramic image I. This means that the panoramic image I includes a larger amount of information at a position closer to the attention direction, and only includes a relatively small amount of information on the side opposite to the attention direction. When a scene image is drawn with the use of the panoramic image I, a portion of the image that is closer to the attention direction can be drawn at a higher resolution.

[0046] Note that, in the above description, the projection surface A1 includes the six polygons and the trunk line T accordingly includes the six line segments, but the present invention is not limited thereto. The trunk line T may include any number of line segments as long as the trunk line T includes three or more line segments. FIG. 7 illustrates the shape of the projection surface A1 in a case where the trunk line T includes four line segments, and the shape of the projection surface A1 is determined by a procedure similar to the one described above. When the trunk line T includes a smaller number of line segments in this way, a difference in information density is larger between the attention direction and the side opposite to the attention direction. Meanwhile, when the number of line segments of the trunk line T is increased, the shape of the trunk line T approaches a semicircle and the difference in information density between the attention direction and the opposite side is reduced.

Further, the branch line F may be placed in a plane that passes through the corresponding relay point and the center point O and is vertical to the center plane.
