Abstract
A mobile device accesses an image generated with an image sensor of the mobile device. The mobile device detects text content in the image (using Optical Character Recognition). The mobile device accesses a reading preference of a user of the mobile device and formats the text content according to the reading preference. The mobile device then generates and displays the formatted text content in a display of the mobile device.

Glossary
[0013] “Component” in this context refers to a device, physical entity, or logic having boundaries defined by function or subroutine calls, branch points, APIs, or other technologies that provide for the partitioning or modularization of particular processing or control functions. Components may be combined via their interfaces with other components to carry out a machine process. A component may be a packaged functional hardware unit designed for use with other components and a part of a program that usually performs a particular function of related functions. Components may constitute either software components (e.g., code embodied on a machine-readable medium) or hardware components. A “hardware component” is a tangible unit capable of performing certain operations and may be configured or arranged in a certain physical manner. In various example embodiments, one or more computer systems (e.g., a standalone computer system, a client computer system, or a server computer system) or one or more hardware components of a computer system (e.g., a processor or a group of processors) may be configured by software (e.g., an application or application portion) as a hardware component that operates to perform certain operations as described herein. A hardware component may also be implemented mechanically, electronically, or any suitable combination thereof. For example, a hardware component may include dedicated circuitry or logic that is permanently configured to perform certain operations. A hardware component may be a special-purpose processor, such as a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) or an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). A hardware component may also include programmable logic or circuitry that is temporarily configured by software to perform certain operations. For example, a hardware component may include software executed by a general-purpose processor or other programmable processor. Once configured by such software, hardware components become specific machines (or specific components of a machine) uniquely tailored to perform the configured functions and are no longer general-purpose processors. It will be appreciated that the decision to implement a hardware component mechanically, in dedicated and permanently configured circuitry, or in temporarily configured circuitry (e.g., configured by software), may be driven by cost and time considerations. Accordingly, the phrase “hardware component” (or “hardware-implemented component”) should be understood to encompass a tangible entity, be that an entity that is physically constructed, permanently configured (e.g., hardwired), or temporarily configured (e.g., programmed) to operate in a certain manner or to perform certain operations described herein. Considering embodiments in which hardware components are temporarily configured (e.g., programmed), each of the hardware components need not be configured or instantiated at any one instance in time. For example, where a hardware component comprises a general-purpose processor configured by software to become a special-purpose processor, the general-purpose processor may be configured as respectively different special-purpose processors (e.g., comprising different hardware components) at different times. Software accordingly configures a particular processor or processors, for example, to constitute a particular hardware component at one instance of time and to constitute a different hardware component at a different instance of time. Hardware components can provide information to, and receive information from, other hardware components. Accordingly, the described hardware components may be regarded as being communicatively coupled. Where multiple hardware components exist contemporaneously, communications may be achieved through signal transmission (e.g., over appropriate circuits and buses) between or among two or more of the hardware components. In embodiments in which multiple hardware components are configured or instantiated at different times, communications between such hardware components may be achieved, for example, through the storage and retrieval of information in memory structures to which the multiple hardware components have access. For example, one hardware component may perform an operation and store the output of that operation in a memory device to which it is communicatively coupled. A further hardware component may then, at a later time, access the memory device to retrieve and process the stored output. Hardware components may also initiate communications with input or output devices, and can operate on a resource (e.g., a collection of information). The various operations of example methods described herein may be performed, at least partially, by one or more processors that are temporarily configured (e.g., by software) or permanently configured to perform the relevant operations. Whether temporarily or permanently configured, such processors may constitute processor-implemented components that operate to perform one or more operations or functions described herein. As used herein, “processor-implemented component” refers to a hardware component implemented using one or more processors. Similarly, the methods described herein may be at least partially processor-implemented, with a particular processor or processors being an example of hardware. For example, at least some of the operations of a method may be performed by one or more processors or processor-implemented components. Moreover, the one or more processors may also operate to support performance of the relevant operations in a “cloud computing” environment or as a “software as a service” (SaaS). For example, at least some of the operations may be performed by a group of computers (as examples of machines including processors), with these operations being accessible via a network (e.g., the Internet) and via one or more appropriate interfaces (e.g., an API). The performance of certain of the operations may be distributed among the processors, not only residing within a single machine, but deployed across a number of machines. In some example embodiments, the processors or processor-implemented components may be located in a single geographic location (e.g., within a home environment, an office environment, or a server farm). In other example embodiments, the processors or processor-implemented components may be distributed across a number of geographic locations.

[0020] The description that follows describes systems, methods, techniques, instruction sequences, and computing machine program products that illustrate example embodiments of the present subject matter. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide an understanding of various embodiments of the present subject matter. It will be evident, however, to those skilled in the art, that embodiments of the present subject matter may be practiced without some or other of these specific details. Examples merely typify possible variations. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, structures (e.g., structural components, such as modules) are optional and may be combined or subdivided, and operations (e.g., in a procedure, algorithm, or other function) may vary in sequence or be combined or subdivided.
[0021] Immersive reading refers to formatting text from a document in such a way that it provides the ability for a user with reading challenges (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD, or visual impairment) to help read. In one example, the user points his/her mobile device (e.g., smart phone, also referred to as “display device”) to a page of a book or a document. The mobile device converts (in real-time) the text in the page or the document to an immersive reader format (e.g., breaking text into syllables, reading the text out loud, increasing the spacing between lines and letters, and color coding words). In one example, the mobile device can be inserted in a head mounted adapter such as a headset to allow the user to view the immersive reading content (e.g., virtual content) in a virtual environment (Virtual Reality also referred to as “VR) or a mixed environment (Augmented Reality also referred to as “AR”). The mobile device in the headset blocks all outside stimulation (or distraction) to the user so that the user can focus on the reading experience. In one example, the immersive reading experience can be operated by the user via an inertial sensor (e.g., gyroscope, accelerometer) in the mobile device or via any other user interface (e.g., remote control, wireless mouse). Therefore, the present application describes the real-time conversion of text from a document to an immersive reading experience in a focused reading mode such as a VR environment (or AR environment).
[0022] In one example embodiment, a mobile device accesses an image generated with an image sensor of the mobile device. The mobile device detects text content in the image (using Optical Character Recognition process). The mobile device accesses a reading preference (e.g., increased line spacing, break words into syllables) and formats the text content according to the reading preference. The mobile device then generates and displays the formatted text content in a display of the mobile device.
[0023] As a result, one or more of the methodologies described herein facilitate solving the technical problem of formatting and displaying text in real time for a virtual environment. As such, one or more of the methodologies described herein may obviate a need for certain efforts or computing resources that otherwise would be involved in communicating an image of a document between different applications to identify text in the document, to determine a viewing format, and to convert the text to the viewing format. As a result, resources used by one or more machines, databases, or devices (e.g., within the environment) may be reduced. Examples of such computing resources include processor cycles, network traffic, memory usage, data storage capacity, power consumption, network bandwidth, and cooling capacity.
[0024] FIG. 1 is a network diagram illustrating a network environment 100 suitable for operating a display device 114, according to some example embodiments. The network environment 100 includes a display device 114 and a server 108, communicatively coupled to each other via a network 104. The display device 114 and the server 108 may each be implemented in a computer system, in whole or in part, as described below with respect to FIG. 10.

The user 102 may be a human user (e.g., a human being), a machine user (e.g., a computer configured by a software program to interact with the display device 114), or any suitable combination thereof (e.g., a human assisted by a machine or a machine supervised by a human). The user 102 is not part of the network environment 100 but is associated with the display device 114 and may be a user 102 of the display device 114. The display device 114 may be a computing device with a display such as a smartphone, a tablet computer, or a wearable computing device (e.g., glasses). The computing device may be hand held or may be removable mounted (via a head mounted adapter 116) to a head of the user 102. The head mounted adapter 116 enables the user 102 to view a display of the display device 114 via a pair of lenses. In one example, the display of the display device 114 includes a screen that displays what is captured with a camera of the display device 114. In another example, the display of the display device 114 may be transparent such as in lenses of wearable computing glasses. In another example, the display may be non-transparent and wearable by the user 102 and covers the field of vision of the user 102.
[0027] The user 102 may be a user of an application in the display device 114. The application may include a AR/VR application configured to provide the user 102 with an experience triggered by a physical object 106, such as a two-dimensional physical object (e.g., a document), a three-dimensional physical object (e.g., a book), a location (e.g., at a work place of the user 102), or any references (e.g., perceived corners of walls or furniture) in the real-world physical environment. For example, the user 102 may point a camera of the display device 114 to capture an image of the physical object 106. For example, the physical object 106 includes a text document 112.
[0028] In one example embodiment, the display device 114 detects the text document 112 and converts the text document 112 into text content (for example, using an OCR application). The display device 114 accesses a reading preference of the user 102 at the display device 114 and formats the text content according to the reading preference. The display device 114 displays the formatted text content in a VR/AR environment to the user 102. For example, the display device 114 displays the formatted text content in a “focused” mode where nothing else displayed besides the formatted text content. In another example, the display device 114 displays the formatted text content as a virtual page overlaid on the text document 112. In other words, to the user 102, the text document 112 has been replaced with the formatted text content.
[0029] In another example embodiment, the image is tracked and recognized locally in the display device 114 using a local context recognition dataset module of the AR/VR application of the display device 114. For example, the local context recognition dataset module may include a library of virtual objects associated with real-world physical objects or references. The AR/VR application then generates additional information corresponding to the image (e.g., a three-dimensional model) and presents this additional information in a display of the display device 114 in response to identifying the recognized image. If the captured image is not recognized locally at the display device 114, the display device 114 downloads additional information (e.g., the three-dimensional model) corresponding to the captured image, from a database of the server 108 over the network 104.

[0037] The processor 208 includes an AR/VR application 210 and an immersive reading application 212. The AR/VR application 210 detects and identifies the physical object 106 using computer vision. For example, the AR/VR application 210 detects the text document 112 from the physical object 106 using OCR and generates a virtual object based on the text document 112. In another example, the AR/VR application 210 retrieves a virtual object based on the identified physical object 106 and renders the virtual object in the display 204. The AR/VR application 210 includes a local rendering engine that generates a visualization of a three-dimensional virtual object overlaid on (e.g., superimposed upon, or otherwise displayed in tandem with) an image of the physical object 106 captured by the optical sensor 214. A visualization of the three-dimensional virtual object may be manipulated by adjusting a position of the physical object 106 (e.g., its physical location, orientation, or both) relative to the optical sensor 214. Similarly, the visualization of the three-dimensional virtual object may be manipulated by adjusting a pose of the display device 114 relative to the physical object 106.
[0038] In another example embodiment, the display device 114 includes a local image recognition module (not shown) configured to determine whether the captured image matches an image locally stored in a local database of images and corresponding additional information (e.g., three-dimensional model and interactive features) on the display device 114. In one example embodiment, the local image recognition module retrieves a primary content dataset from the server 108 and generates and updates a contextual content dataset based on an image captured with the display device 114.

In another example, the AR/VR application 210 displays the formatted text content in an AR immersive format (e.g., the display 204 displays the formatted text content with a live-image captured from the optical sensor 214). The AR/VR application 210 renders the formatted text content contained in the image of the text document 112. In another example, the AR/VR application 210 renders the formatted text content to appear on the physical object 106 (e.g., the size of the formatted text content matches the size of the physical object 106).
[0040] The storage device 206 stores the reading preference of the user 102. For example, the reading preference includes breaking text into syllables, reading the text out loud, increasing the spacing between lines and letters, and color coding words.
[0041] In another example embodiment, the storage device 206 may be configured to store a database of visual references (e.g., images) and corresponding experiences (e.g., three-dimensional virtual objects, interactive features of the three-dimensional virtual objects). In one example embodiment, the storage device 206 includes a primary content dataset, a contextual content dataset, and a visualization content dataset. The primary content dataset includes, for example, a first set of images and corresponding experiences (e.g., interaction with three-dimensional virtual object models). For example, an image may be associated with one or more virtual object models. The primary content dataset may include a core set of images of the most accessed images determined by the server 108. The core set of images may include a limited number of images identified by the server 108. For example, the core set of images may include the images depicting covers of the ten most viewed physical objects and their corresponding experiences (e.g., virtual objects that represent the ten most viewed physical objects). In another example, the server 108 may generate the first set of images based on the most popular or often scanned images received at the server 108. Thus, the primary content dataset does not depend on physical objects or images scanned by the display device 114.
[0042] The contextual content dataset includes, for example, a second set of images and corresponding experiences (e.g., three-dimensional virtual object models) retrieved from the server 108. For example, images captured with the display device 114 that are not recognized (e.g., by the server 108) in the primary content dataset are submitted to the server 108 for recognition. If the captured image is recognized by the server 108, a corresponding experience may be downloaded at the display device 114 and stored in the contextual content dataset. Thus, the contextual content dataset relies on the context in which the display device 114 has been used. As such, the contextual content dataset depends on objects or images scanned by display device 114.
